Her life is changed when a stray dog shows up at her home. Because of the dog she meets Lamar Benfield the local dog catcher. They become friends and she finds out about his nephew Wesley who is in a juvenile detention center.

Because of her Christian values, she feels that she needs to meet Welsey and takes him cake and pie. She loves to cook and feels the need to feed everyone.

After a very strange and eventful weekend spent with Welsey, she decides to become his guardian, and jokes with her single daughter that she may marry him so that she can have the grandchildren she has always wanted. She even considers rescuing the the dog from the pound.

Mattie reminds me of several ladies in my church when I was growing up. They were widows like Mattie and always had to feed you before you left their home. If you didn't eat with them it was almost an insult to them.
