Robert Lowell

Lowell wrote about things that were happening in the world during his time. I read "Fall 1961" which is about the fear of nuclear war.

Elizabeth Bishop

The poems I read were about nature, mostly the beach and the sea. I read "The Fish". It's About a fisherman who catches a prize fish that has gotten away at least four times before from other fishermen. In the end the fisherman lets the fish go. It was a greater victory to have caught such a great fish and then let it go, then to keep it and take it to shore.

Langston Hughes

I enjoyed his poetry. It was easy to read and understand. He wrote about the local daily life.
I read "Madam and the Rent Man". The rent man comes to collect the rent, but the renter is not willing to pay because the problems that need to be fixed haven't been. They both agree in the end the neither is happy.

Hart Crane

I read several of Crane's poems and had trouble understanding them.

T. S. Eliot

I read "Preludes" The street represents a mans daily life. He daydreams about what his life could be vs. what the reality of his life really is.

Marianne Moore

I did not care for her work. I read "A Grave". It's about a man looking at the sea and comparing it to a grave.

Robert Frost

His poetry seems to have a theme about nature. I read "The Road not Taken", one of my favorite poems.

Emily Dickinson

I read several of her poems and they all seemed sad and depressing.

Walt Whitman

I enjoyed Whitman's poems. One of the poems I read was "Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night". It's about a father who stays with the body of his son on the battlefield overnight. You feel the emotions of the father as he watches "vigil" overnight.

The Tales of Uncle Remus

Brer Rabbit is the trickster of all times. He is always getting himself into trouble, but somehow manages to get out of it, usually at someone elses expense. He not only outsmarts the animals, but also any humans he may encounter.

I enjoyed reading The Tales of Uncle Remus. It brings back memories of going to the movies with my mother to see Song of the South.

Walking Across Egypt

Mattie Rigsbee is a senior citizen who's life revolves around her family, church and friends. Her life is changed when a stray dog shows up at her home. Because of the dog she meets Lamar Benfield the local dog catcher. They become friends and she finds out about his nephew Wesley who is in a juvenile detention center.

Because of her Christian values, she feels that she needs to meet Welsey and takes him cake and pie. She loves to cook and feels the need to feed everyone.

After a very strange and eventful weekend spent with Welsey, she decides to become his guardian, and jokes with her single daughter that she may marry him so that she can have the grandchildren she has always wanted. She even considers rescuing the the dog from the pound.

Mattie reminds me of several ladies in my church when I was growing up. They were widows like Mattie and always had to feed you before you left their home. If you didn't eat with them it was almost an insult to them. It was their "small way" of being needed and feeling useful.

The World Made Straight

The World Made Straight was a interesting book. Travis and Leonard become friends through the discovery of a crop of marijuana. Leonard a former school teacher now small time drug dealer takes Travis under his wing and helps him get his GED. They both are intersted in an event that took place during The Civil War near their home. At the end of each chapter of the story are entries from a Civil war doctor's journal that ties in with the event.

Fair and Tender Ladies

I didn't like Fair and Tender Ladies. It was very predictible. In most situations you knew what the outcome would be. Ivy was a hard working person who wanted an education and to better herself, but in the end the call of the mountain was stronger than that desire.

Porgy

I enjoyed reading Porgy. I believe that Heyward tried to portray this time in history the best that he could being that he was just looking in at the lives, not living them. I enjoyed the characters and didn't have much trouble with the Gullah dialect.

Photobucket

Debbie and I used Photobucket to post pictures from our trip to San Antonio on the Libray home page.

This has truly been a learning experience. Many thanks to Shannon. Without her help I don't think I could have been able to complete all the tasks.

MP3 Player

I have been listening to Eldest By Christopher Paolini. I downloaded part of it to the MP3 player.

Firefox

I tried to download Firefox but was told that I was not authorized to view it. I took the tutorial to learn about it.

Facebook

I took a tour of facebook. I don't like to give out personal information on the web, so it wouldn't be of much use to me. I do see how it would be of interest for people interested in social networking on the web.

# 7

Library Websites

I looked at several different library websites. I think it would be a good idea to add a local map with the location of the library marked and also give driving directions.

We could also include more pictures of activities at the library.

# 20

MovieFlix and Blinkxx

Bookmarklets are tools that give you the ability to modify the way web pages are displayed.

#13

MySpace

I don't like to give out personal information on the internet, so it's not something I would be interested in using. I do see how it could be interesting to others who like to socialize on the internet.

#11

Librarything.com

I set up a librarything account and have added several of the books I own. It's interesting to see how many other people own the same titles that you do.

#10

Libraryelf

I think this is a really nice tool to have. It will send you an email that your library book will soon be due. I think our patrons would like to have this service available to them.
